Ban Chang Kuih 曼煎糕 @Burma Road, Penang

Penang [檳城] • 05 JUNE 2013
This is Penang Ban Chang Kuih, is a type of Penang pan cake, literally means million heated cake. It is pan cake which is made from flour and dusted with sugar and ground peanut, then with paste of magerine.

The original Ban Chang Kuih is of bigger and higher, which was prepared by using one big pan. The seller will cut the big cake into smaller portion. In those day, the pan cake is only plain or pan cake with white sugar. Later black sugar(it is actually brown sugar, but Penang people called it black sugar in Hokkian) provided another alternative.

The stall we visited is at Burma Road, Pulau Tikus, beside Solok Moulmein ; just opposite the police station,in front of a coffee shop called Swee Kong. The man has been in the business for more than 10 years, it was a popular stall. You can see cars parking beside to wait for their turn to buy the pan cake.

Taste: 5/5
Price: RM 0.60 - RM 2 depending on the ingredients

It is also known as Chinese pancake. Or you may call it Chinse waffle. It is available in two different types - thin and crispy or thick and spongy. Traditionally it contains 3 things - butter, sugar and grinned peanuts. The seller usually uses 8-10 mini pans to cook these pancakes and fold it into half (without breaking it), each using about a minute or two. You may choose to add sweet corn and egg if you want it to be richer or embrace the different menu that some sellers have prepared: raisins, tuna, meat floss, cheese and so on. Try one and you will want to explore more of other flavors!
